Mike has been steady in Therapies since this past June and is doing amazing. They have him walking up and down the halls with a walker and in the parallel bars. The treadmill was very difficult for all of us in the beginning, teaching him how to pick up his foot and bend his knee and at the same time try to keep his hips straight. Now he is up to 16 minutes on the treadmill and the therapists just have to cue him.
They also have him walking in the bars with just one hand. That so far I think is the most difficult exercise for him. His brain and body connection has a hard time getting all parts to work, but in just 4 weeks I have seen him improve and he is on his way....
This past August Mike "walked" me down a very short aisle and had a wonderful chat with my soon to be husband. It was wonderful to have him stand and talk to Steve...
This past fall Mike was invited to be in a fashion show for Logan Magazine. He was the hit of the show.
We have been able to get Mike up to Schweitzer Mountain this year. They have a sitski and have been wonderful with Mike. He has loved it and I hope to get him up there for spring skiing.
We are also skipping the hyperbaric chamber this spring. He is doing so well with his therapies that I can't see taking him out of them for 2 months right now. We are also going to start him with a personal trainer and us at the local gym. He is ready...
So between activities, starting up violin again and therapies the chamber is not an option this Spring. Going to shoot for Fall.
I am also going to be checking into some summer courses for him. I don't care if he fails them, I think he needs to get out and be in that environment. He needs more stimulation socially and educationally. Anything to try to help his memory and future independence.
His short term memory gets better all the time. Granted it is exceptionally small steps, but he will remember things he needs to tell me such as he had a dream or he needs something in his bathroom, or someone called... He is also remembering places that we have been, he might not remember what we did, but he recognizes.
He is still happy and loves to joke around. I am so grateful for his hugs and loves and kisses.
Please continue to Pray for Mike. He has come so far.
